Tea for 2

One of my teacher friends once shared a story about one of her elementary students going on a weekend trip with her parents. Being the suburban teacher that she is, she should have known that a simple weekend trip could be to downtown Vancouver. Oh do I ever take for granted that we live close to not only downtown, but 3 gorgeous mountains to go boarding on. And unlike most weekends, I could finally appreciate what that student meant.

It was Derrick’s birthday! And it just so happened that a bunch of us got together to snowboard on Cypress. Three dive rolls, five bum drops, and two backward extension rolls. It was gymnastics practice alright, but only with 10X more pain. But with smart planning and forecasting abilities, Derrick and I made it to our massage appointment early the next day. What a treat!

However, the highlight for me was after the spa. It was a surprise afternoon tea at the Shangri-La hotel lobby lounge downtown. Bite-sized pastries, gourmet-styled hors d’oeuvres, and THE best scones ever. Small-looking portions but filling as ever!

I thought this would be a nice birthday treat for Derrick as his best friend always recommended having afternoon tea at the Four Seasons… but in Hong Kong. So….. thought this would be just as nice. The scones you see below were served with clotted cream, fresh apricot and raspberry jam.

Normally scones have a particular texture and density, but these were more on the buttery and flaky side. There was seriously nothing wrong with that.

The tea on the other hand was served in fine China, with cups the size only serious tea drinkers can appreciate – the kind you don’t need to refill every 2 sips. It was a Japanese Cherry black tea for Derrick, and a Jasmine green tea for me.

After the starter scones, the 3-tiered tray came with sandwiches, hors d’oeurves and dessert on top.

Creations made with avocado and crab, and my favourite of this bunch – mini peking duck sliders. OK, they had a more elegant way of describing the sliders…

I think we only made it through two thirds of the dessert. What killed us more was that we were offered more scones but couldn’t bite on the offer…. too full!

Two thumbs up for me. Afternoon tea is served daily.

Cheers,
