Like music, fonts fall into the dangerous pit of intellectual property, licensing and royalty issues. We purchase fonts for all of our card designs, monograms and wedding invites here at IKIWISI, but consider it a splurge for us. So over the years, we’ve bookmarked our favourite sites for FREE fonts.
There are sites dedicated to free fonts, but many retailing sites also have sections for free downloads. I prefer legit sites as it’s so hard to trust what you find on the Internet. Anyhow, below are my top four sites for finding modern, retro, and display typefaces.
Font Diner specializes in retro fonts. Go to their main page and scroll to the very bottom and click on “Free Silverware”. Tons of free fonts with personality. Available for both Mac and PC.
The League of Moveable Type is probably your best source of modern and up-to-date typefaces. Just AWESOME.
Font Shop offers up free fonts in a very hidden section. From the main page, click the Fonts Tab > “More” category > Free Fonts. Cool dingbats available from the Free Fonts page.
And Dafont.com is probably a site you’re already aware of. You can spend countless hours finding knock-off fonts for free here.
But with all sites, be sure to read their usage policies carefully. Not all free fonts can be used the same. Enjoy this treasury of design goodies. We’ll be back with more!
Cheers,
> Christine
