I’ve said it before, I’m a total sucker for buying bottles of wine with cool labels. I know I should know better but I can’t help it. Wine bottle labels have come a long way and if it’s well designed and graphically interesting, I’ll take the chance. Also, I don’t really remember new wines I try by their name but if I saw the label, I’d know it. Wine snobs, cringe away.
We had a girls night a little while ago and Christine and I were tasked with bringing some wine. We headed to the liquor store and within 10 feet of entering the store, we saw these bottles of wine:
Of course we stop in our tracks. Of course we beeline to the shelf to drool over the label and admire the awesome illustration. And of course we buy it. Bear Flag wines aren’t expensive and are blends from California. We figured that even if it was crappy, we’d have a cool bottle to blog about! The cashier raved about it and she was right. The wine wasn’t crap and I’d definitely buy it again.
Here’s a closer look at the labels. Designed by Eduardo Bertone, it’s a total feast for the eyes. I’m love with his style of illustration since I’m partial to sketch collages. For a higher res version, check out his blog.
My favourite part of the whole package design is his clever way of dealing with the barcode. If you look at the first pic, you’ll see a bunch of lines around the neck. That’s the barcode! LOVE IT.
Next time you’re out for a bottle, wander around and see if you can find this one. It’s worth the look!
