I get that not everyone puts as much thought into wedding invites as I do. I’m an admitted wedding invite snob. I do understand that for budget reasons, many brides want to design it themselves. But please, for the love of design gods, consider fonts other than Monotype Corsiva, Brush Script or Mistral! You aren’t limited to what comes standard with your computer. There’s a whole wide world of fonts out there, lots of them free or often very inexpensive if you do have to pay. Considering what you’ll be spending on the big day, $50-$100 is a drop in the bucket. This small investment for unique type will instantly elevate your invite from the typical to the custom. If done right, a beautiful typographic design will wow your guests more than any embellishment could.
Here are some lovely fonts to consider:
Buffet Script by Alejandro Paul is based on the calligraphy by Alf Becker, quite possibly one of the greatest American sigh lettering artists of all time. It’s full of personality with great ligatures but still readable. Love it! Available from Veer and Fontshop.
Corinthia by P22 is light and flows so nicely from one letter to the next. The style is decidedly modern so it’s perfect for a bride who wants to avoid the typical stuffy old world font without giving up the script aspect. Available from P22 and Fontshop and it’s a bargain at $20.
Another great font from Alejandro Paul, Adios Script has more dramatic ligatures and is elaborate in design. This font offers you endless options with its huge variety of swashes and ornaments. The lowercase “h” has 43 variants!!! With so many choices and combinations available to each letter, it gives every word a uniqueness that can’t be found with typical fonts. Available from Veer for $119.
Marnie from ITC is a much more restrained option. No crazy swashes here but instead a very legible script with some nice ligatures to soften the font. Available from Fontshop for $39.
The last one for today is Tamarillo from Jukebox Type. This is decidedly retro so it’s not right for everyone but if you’re looking for something fun and loose, this is it. Available from Veer for $49.
There are SO many more options so check back next week for another round. Happy weekend!

I second every thought you have about fonts used for wedding invites. The possibilities are endless – why settle for what Microsoft offers by default?!?
