CardsInk

Dear all aspiring card designers, this is news that may interest you! If you’re a big fan of Threadless.com, here’s a site that is the upcoming equivalent in the greeting card world – Cards Ink.

What seems to be a site that’s just starting up, is a community for at-home card designers to sell their designs. It’s no where close to rivaling the pop culture status of Threadless (a way cool t-shirt site for those who are unaware), but with the right marketing mix, this could be something popular. But will it be?

How it works is that you sign up to become a member of the community. This gives you the chance to upload designs and vote. By meeting a minimum number of votes, and for being the most popular, CardsInk can choose to officially publish and print your design – and even specify letterpress if your design is set up for it. The only catch is that if you want your friends to vote for your design, they need to sign up for the site as well.

It’s an idea that I think could do well but it does bring up the question of whether people are willing to buy cards online. Are you really going to buy a $4 card and pay $3 shipping? For now the variety is few, but here is a sample of some designs posted to date.
