Olympic Designs: Part 2 is brought to you by…

Welcome back to part two of our observations on the Olympics – how sponsors are transforming Vancouver just days before the Games. Yesterday, we shared what Coke was doing inside The Bay, but today we have a variety of installations and out-of-home ads by major consumer electronics companies and more.

Roads were already closed off around Canada Place. You couldn’t even sneak into the volunteer training sessions at the Convention Centre – it’s that secretive. I would imagine they would even need to sign a non-disclosure agreement too. But while having lunch with colleagues today, I learned that there are approximately 40,000 volunteers for the Games. That’s an entire Vancouver Sun Run!

Regardless, the VANOC team has made every touchpoint an artistic mural of athletes and 2010 designs. Here’s what Canada Place looked like as of Sunday.

As many of you are aware, the Olympic countdown clock stands behind the Vancouver Art Gallery. But did you know it was sponsored by Omega?

RBC have fully wrapped their buildings – and I’m sure you can see them from the airplane and the slopes of North Vancouver.

Samsung leads you out of the airport with streets lined with flags and more building wraps downtown.

And a cute installation inside Pacific Centre – seems to be Samsung’s “thing”. If you ever travel to Dallas, Samsung has a huge installation inside that airport with a gigantic hand holding a gigantic flip phone.

And lastly, Acer sponsored installations in areas dedicated to the Cultural Olympiad.

Decorative “trees” with ornaments which looked like something our local elementary schools participated in. If you look closely, Acer sneaks their ornaments in too.

And at the end of Granville Street are playful, life-sized photo frames!

And just for fun, our lunch from that day. Japadog on Burrard….. yummers…. totally hit the spot.

I started my new job last week as a User Experience Designer. Huh? you might say. Well, the best way to describe what it is, is to tell you what user experience design isn't. It's a totally new role for me, a departure from what I've been doing for the past few years but I'm really excited about it. // Read More
