I subscribe to Before & After, a magazine that offers excellent practical tips and tutorials for graphic design. In their latest Design Talk blog post, Creative Director John McWade introduces the wonderful find that is the Aeronaut font.
Designed by Georg Herold-Wildfellner of FaceType, it’s a blackletter type font that has some really fun adornments that make it perfect for a holiday card. The best part about this font is that you can set the base type in one colour, and then the adornments in another colour as a different layer. If that didn’t make sense at all, read a much better explanation by John here. By having the flourishes as a different layer, you can play around with the colours without having to fuss with the font in Illustrator.
Here are some examples and you can see it’s not just for Christmas:
The foundry has another font that works in a similar way called Ivory. Again, the swashes are a separate style allowing for multi-layering. Here’s how it works:
And this would be the end result:
Both fonts are on sale right now, but only for a few more days. I definitely suggest getting Areonaut, if not for this holiday season then the next. Happy typesetting!
