One of a Kind – Toby Mercer

One of my favourite booths at the Ond of a Kind show was Toby Mercer’s. I’ve always had a thing for paper art – the intricate cuts and scores that turn a 2-D sheet into a 3-D work of art. But I’ve never seen anything quite like Toby’s work.

A Montana native that has worked in paint mediums, photography, ceramics and jewelry, Toby created his own original 3-D medium that he calls the Stratagraphic. Essentially it’s paper that is cut away and layered together to create “haut relief” pieces. It’s all done by hand using simple tools like a straightedge and mat knives. You really need to just see it to appreciate it. The hours of precision work is something to be admired and his art is exactly the kind of modern piece that I’d love in my home. Visit his site to see the rest of his work.

Visit design blogs today and you'll see quite a few inspiration board posts. They are usually a collection of pictures, nicely laid out to look like one cohesive unit with the intention of conveying a particular look and feel. For any designer, one of the first steps of a new project is research and that includes creating inspiration boards. In the old days, you can cut things out and glue or tape it to a board literally but what about now, when most images are online and we're trying to save trees by not printing things out? Trip to Oz: Day 5 for Friday Down Under
With only 1.5 days worth of personal time on this trip, (non-work) highlights of my trip were eating in the lanes downtown Melbourne (or CBD as they call it), free admission to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, and finding Malaysian Laksa with ease. For Vancouverites reading this post, Laksa to Melbourne/Sydney is like Sushi to Vancouver - everywhere. I can't deny my coconut curry cravings. On a print design note, I'd like to leave you with a Five for Friday post with many more paper discoveries. // Read More
