Five For Friday – Oil and Vinegar

by cassie on September 25, 2009

I don’t think two things could go together any better than olive oil and balsamic vinegar, despite the tired saying. Whether it’s to dip bread in or as a salad dressing, sometimes the simpliest ingredients are best.

I have a deep love for balsamic vinegar – even going so far as to visit the birthplace (Modena, Italia) and tour a vinegar producer. It was in a beautiful home, a few generations old where they grow the grapes in their own backyard and ferment and age the vinegars in their attic. Tasting vinegars aged in cherry wood, some more than 25 years old was amazing. Real, proper, authentic and aged vinegar is sweet, slightly thick and is divine on ice cream and strawberries. Like fine wine, balsamic vinegar is just as complex and requires both art and science to produce a superior result.

Traditional vinegar comes in a pretty standard bottle with a unique shape particular to the Modena region. But that’s not to say that some producers haven’t ventured to design some neat packaging. Here are some of the more unique along with their counterpart. Yum!

From Leve Holthausen’s portfolio, the goal was to design oil and vinegar packaging to appeal to a young market:

From Pusateri’s Fine Foods in Toronto, rare and unique oil and vinegar that looks more like men’s shaving products!

At Hotel Chocolat, oil and vinegar for the chocolate lover:

At Carter & Cavero, oil and vinegar trios from Italy and Spain:

And if the packaging isn’t to your liking, then these dispensers will definitely look sharp on the table. From Typhoon via Home Couture:
